It’s now December, the month of Christmasis upon us! Around this time TV and radio around the world is going nuts with advertising trying to get you to spend as much as possible on those you love (or not).

It is now perhaps a great time to introduce you to making your own Christmas gifts for friends and family. It can be incredibly fun and entertaining. Often the best part about giving gifts (whether giving or receiving) is in the actual process leading up to giving the gift. People don’t tend to care how much you spend on a gift, many people run secret santas where you pick someone’s name out of a hat a work and you’re allowed to spend no more than $10. What people do care about is how much thought went into the process in the first place.

What could show someone that you’ve put lots of thought into their gift more than anything? A homemade gift of course. But wait, what if you’re not the crafty type, what if you’ve always ended up with a large amount of mess on previous attempts. Well don’t worry there are plenty of websites out there that have step by step instructions how to make the most amazing gifts all with absolutely minimal effort and mess!

In the festive period everyone is so busy getting ready and planning everything and most of the time these days everyone buys a big pack of Christmas cards and goes through their list checking off who to write to and who not to. Their proverbial naughty and nice list. But wouldn’t it be nice if we just had that bit of extra time so we could dust off our creative side and make some of our own.

Making Christmas cards is fun, especially if you have kids around. Bring out the glue and the glitter, the paper tissue and scissors and sooner rather than later a big mess is going to happen. If you’re like me you’re probably going to want some guidance, perhaps you have an idea of what you want to make (or not at all) and need to know the step-by-step guide to making it. There are others still who will already be well practiced masters of card making and just need inspiration (not like Christmas wasn’t inspiration enough though right?!).

There really is no end to what you can do with a tree, only your imagination will hold you back. The materials you can use are endless: paper, plasticine, tinsel, chocolate (yeah the kids will thank you for this one), and beads to name but a few. I am however getting ahead of myself. First you gotta pick what kind of tree you’re going to use.

Choosing your Christmas Tree for Decorating

There are many pros and cons to each tree. A real tree after a few weeks will start shedding it’s needles “en mass”. If the tree is sitting above a carpet you’re going to have a nightmare trying to clean them all up, a plastic tree is not going to give you than problem. On the other hand a natural tree gives off a fantastic natural but will only last one Christmas and a plastic tree has no smell but can be used year after year.

OK so first of all you’re going to want to collect all the items you need for decorating your Christmas tree. Here’s some you might try:

Baubles:

These come in many shapes and sizes. Personally I like to use the star and ball shaped ones like these.

Get yourself a lot of these they make for a great cheap decoration!

Tinsel:

You can’t go wrong with tinsel. You can use it to decorate the tree, the fireplace, the doors and windows, dinner plates, hats and family members and friends!

Christmas Tree Chocolate:

Next up in our Christmas tree decorating ideas list is chocolate, yeah you know what I mean. At this time of year you can indulge and for once not feel bad about it. There is always the possibility that if you leave chocolate decorations on the tree they wont be there for very long!

One of my favorite Christmas tree chocolates was a hollow Santa very similar to the picture. It was very light and so would make the branches bend. This saved many decorations from falling off the tree and smashing on the floor. Other favorites included Christmas tree shaped chocolates and bunny shaped chocolates, which I’m sure were more for Easter however they found their way on there.
